‘Zabb’ means tasty and delicious in Thai, and Zabbs Thai Food Restaurant is certainly that. Zabbs on Pandosy is one of my favorite places to go for a quick bite. I love the quaint ambiance, and it can even be romantic if you’re there when it’s not too busy.
The restaurant is smaller with about 11 tables so if you avoid the chaotic dinner rush and go later in the evening the experience is extremely enjoyable.
When we arrived at around 6p, our cheerful server Anna sat us immediately. She asked us what we would like to drink and at only $5 per glass, I got their house red, which is a Sawmill Creek Merlot. Their domestic beer prices are a steal as well at only $5 a bottle, with an amazing selection of microbrews such as Parallel 49’s Jerkface and Gypsy Tears Ruby Ale. They also carry the Red Racer IPA, and Steam Whistle Pilsner.
As a starter, we began with the classic spring rolls. They were fantastic and come with a side of plum sauce for dipping. They came extremely hot, so we had to let them sit for a bit when I nearly burnt my tongue off with the first bite.
We ordered the amazing Chicken Panang Curry with cucumber salad and the Basil Pork with carrots and green beans for our main dishes. We also ordered a side of rice, which of course you need to soak up the curry. What I love about Thai food is that it’s great for sharing, which allows you to experience more of what they have to offer.
I have never once had a bad meal at Zabbs. I’m not even sure it’s possible! The food is always consistently good, the service is always fantastic, the price point is reasonable – not one dish is over the cost of $13. Even dessert, with a choice of fried ice cream or coconut flan, is only $5. There are not too many places in the city where you can get a starter, a fantastic meal, a couple of drinks, and dessert to share for two for under $50.
Zabbs has two locations you can enjoy. Owner Narumal Chowchang opened the Zabbs on Pandosy in mid-2012 and is located at 3009 Pandosy Street. With the success of the Mission restaurant, she decided to open a second restaurant in Rutland in 2015, which is located at 11-150 Hollywood Rd South in Rutland. Hours are the same at both locations: 11a-230p for lunch 430p-830p for dinner.
If unable to sit and have a meal at Zabbs, the Rutland now offers the ability to order online, which is very convenient if you’re on the way home from work. For takeaway at the Mission location, it’s a simple as giving them a quick call to place your order. You can also call for delivery but note they do hire an outside service so the minimum charge begins at $5 and can get quite pricey the further away you live.
