When a local Foodie like myself gets approached with an opportunity to meet people in Kelowna who are very passionate about health, play with farm animals, AND eat an immense amounts of vegan deliciousness, how could I pass that up?
I personally have been practicing a vegan lifestyle for about 2 years now. I say ‘practicing’ because flexibility has been necessary for me and that is okay. I really value the benefits of a plant based lifestyle and I am so fascinated by the creativity that is implemented when cooking vegan recipes. I LOVE trying new dishes and being able to go to a potluck where there is an opportunity to try an abundance of food with just a $5 donation. It’s a cause too unique to pass up!
I attended Arion’s Potluck last Saturday. With my vegan dish in hand and an empty stomach ready to eat all the food, I was welcomed by Heather and her volunteer staff with open arms. Heather always makes sure that everyone’s allergies are recognized, that gluten free options are available, and that all visitors are comfortable, happy and get a chance to interact with the animals on the farm. There were about 30 people in attendance and among those were solo adventurers like myself, couples, and families with toddlers all the way up to teenagers. It was amazing to see such a wide range of age groups enjoying delicious vegan food, having conversations about health, and just enjoying each others company. There is no better feeling than meeting a stranger and being able to bond over one’s addiction to vegan desserts. I mean if there is a plate of cookies, a big trifle, AND peanut butter squares… it would be rude not to try them all right?
What I find most interesting about this event is that a lot of people in attendance at the potluck were not even vegan!
Arion Therapeutic has provided a safe space for people to be curious about plant based lifestyles without feeling like they need to label themselves as “Vegan”. It is an opportunity to see what a plant based lifestyle is all about, step outside one’s comfort zone and embrace cooking new and alternative recipes that they may not try otherwise.
Arion Therapeutic Farm is an education and community focused farm that offers a place for people to spend time with family and friends among farm animals like horses, donkeys, goats, and llamas just to name a few. They have a great volunteer program and therapeutic riding services that make a large impact in Kelowna’s community. They also have a lot of birthday parties, field trips, and farm tours coming through daily.
Be sure to keep your eye out for their next Vegan Potluck in June! The gatherings keep growing because our healthy-driven city is catching on to this great opportunity so to make sure you don’t miss out on filling your stomach with healthy and delicious food. I would for sure give Arion a like on Facebook!
